About IP Addresses
What is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network. Think of it as your device's address on the internet, similar to how a street address identifies your home. There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 (like 192.168.1.1) and IPv6 (like 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334).
Public vs Private IP Addresses
Your public IP address is visible to websites and services you connect to on the internet. It's assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Private IP addresses are used within your local network (home or office) and aren't visible from the internet. Common private IP ranges start with 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16-31.x.x.
IP Geolocation Accuracy
IP-based location information is approximate and typically accurate to the city level. It's based on databases maintained by regional internet registries. VPNs, proxies, and mobile networks can affect the accuracy of IP geolocation. The location shown represents your ISP's server location, not necessarily your exact physical location.
